The file types used for images in websites are usually jpg, gif or png. These file types are in a compressed format therefore load a lot faster than others. The gif image type is predominantly used for drawings, menus or logos, whereas the jpg image type is used for photographs. If editing a jpg, prior to use on a website, it is advisable to save the jpg in the photo-editing software’s native format ie psd, xcf, and change it back to a jpg when it is ready to be uploaded. The reason for this is that the jpg loses quality each time it is saved, due to the type of compression it uses.
Image Formats
Size Does Matter
The resolution of an image plays a large role in the actual file size of that image. What is the difference between viewing an image with a resolution of 96 pixels/inch and 500 pixels/inch? If you are printing the image, obviously the latter would be a far better quality result. If you are viewing the image on a monitor, then the only difference between how they appear is that the 96 pixel/inch will load faster as it is a smaller file size. The reason for this is that the average resolution for a monitor is 96 pixels/inch, therefore you will only ever see 96 pixels/inch on such a screen.
